There are more than one perspective in life. Two sides of the same coin, darkness that comes with the light. We fight our angels and demons everyday. Sometimes we rise like the angels in heaven, while other times, we fall like the devils.

War in Heaven: A Kickstarter Campaign

Drived by personal and professional experience during the pandemic, we want to create a deck that highlights the contrast between good vs evil, the need of shifting perspective and seeing the good that comes with the bad. Since it will be the first deck we launched under our studio, Temma & Co, the deck must be unique enough to stand out in the sea of playing card project in our chosen platform Kickstarter and able to attract playing card enthusiasts.

The research shown that decks with strong story concept, well prepared design, and premium finish with limited run only on Kickstarter are the preferred ones. We decided to create a deck inspired by the War in Heaven from the Book of Revelations. Each suite matches a specific angel with a corresponding demon according to their ranks in the hierarchy. The angelic tier follows the original Christian Angelology. The demonic tier is created based on each of the demon’s power level, taken from various sources such as Dante’s Inferno, Ars Goethia, and Lantern of Light, as there are no actual classification of Hell/demon hierarchy.

Additionally, we researched further into existing campaign structures to establish the backers rewards, timeline of production, fullfilment centers, printing vendors, card community as well as the required social media promotion.

Goals

Formulating campaign story based on the good vs evil, angel vs demon concept.

Illustrating characters for individual card face featuring angel and its demon’s counterpart

Designing deck bricks, printing finish, coins, posters, booklet, and brick boxes.

Creating a functional campaign structure
with reward tiers, production timeline and stretch goals.

Managing a working campaign from the launched until product delivery.

Target Market

All ages, Kickstarter platform, mostly based in USA, Canada, and parts of Europe

Cardist communities, playing card collectors and enthusiasts, fellow creators on Kickstarter, magicians, card deallers,

Stylescape

There two stylescape created for the project, one for the overall mood of the collections, while the other focuses on the character designs. The collections stylescape emphasizes the use of gold and copper based elements, combining between organic and geometrical shapes, taking inspiration from art deco period. The character design stylescape shows a semi realistic illustrations of angels and demons, with monochromatic colors. Additionally, intricate details, washed out backgrounds, drapes on attires, and the use of etching technique are further highlighted.

Lux Bellator

Lux Bellator is latin for ‘Light Warrior’, contrasting to the fact that Lucifer, a demon, was once a ‘Light Warrior’. One can be evil by nature or nurture and in this case even Angels who are born of pure light can fall. The sigil is a remake of the angelic summoning circle, with each of the four card suits added into it. The symbols of wings are placed into the card backs, complimenting the sigils. The numbered seal are placed on the bottom part of each tuck box to emphasize on the exclusivity as a collector’s item, showing the series creator and manufacturer name. The back of the card includes gold foil finish, similar to the tuck.

Elements on the tuck was embossed, and printed on off-white textured paper. Getting the right finish and the right foil proof to be a challenge, as we were limited to providing written instructions via email and visual on slides to the manufacturer in other country. The printed proof of the tucks were delivered via international courrier to our city, taking two weeks at the minimum due to pandemic restrictions, after which we can prepare feedback on the printed materials. The process were repeated twice before we get the most satisfying result.

The initial planning includes how each card suites can be incorporated into the character designs. The card suites are subtlely blended into the shapes of the characters’ weapons, accesories and the overall shape of their clothings. The angelic tier follows the original Christian Angelology, as follows:

Spades: Cherubims
Hearts
: The Powers
Clubs
: Dominions
Diamonds
: Archangels

The face cards for Lux Bellator are all drawn in three colors of red, green, and cream to maintain consistency.

Gehenna

Gehenna is taken from the Hebrew Bible that is said to be a place where the wicked are headed to. It is not the same as Hell as it is said to be more of a waiting room or a purgatory for those to atone and think of their sins, conveying that even if demons fall to hell, there is always opportunities for atonement. The sigil, just like Lux Bellator’s, is a remake of the demonic summoning circle, with each of the four card suits added into it. The symbols of snakes are placed into the card backs, representing the demon in the garden of eden who temps Adam and Eve. The snakes were hand drawn and then scanned digitally to be vectorized using Adobe Illustrator. The back of the card includes gold foil finish, similar to the tuck.

Graphic elements on the tuck used elevated UV spot finish, adding to its exclusivity. It is printed on black-washed textured paper. A more complex tuck than its light counterpart, the Gehenna tucks additionally features fluorescent ink which can glow in dark, on the form of its front sigil and the snakes.

Gehenna features black card back and front. The face cards are all colored in cream. The use of single color for the Gehenna was to create contrast to the black background, maintaining a solemn air in accordance to the concept of the Gehenna tuck. The demonic tier is created based on each of the demon’s power level, taken from various sources such as Dante’s Inferno, Ars Goethia, and Lantern of Light, as there are no actual classification of Hell/demon hierarchy.

Spades
: Astaroth, Beelzebub, Lucifer
Hearts
: Leviathan, Lilith, Baphomet
Clubs
: Berserkers
Diamonds
: Baal, Asmodeus, Belphegor

Jokers & Aces

Mephistopheles from Goethe’s Faust was chosen as the Joker due to his nature as a trickster that roams outside of the demon’s world. Each of the deck series has two versions of Joker; one in full color and the other one in monochromatic cream color. The aces are inspired from the shape of christian cross representing divinity, with a snake as the representation of the devil entangled on it. Each aces are shaped similar to the card suits.

Add On Items

The posters features the illustrations on the face cards, while he coin features the design from the sigils seen on the card back; one side features the angel summoning sigil and the other side the devil summoning sigil. We also create a booklet, in order to give further information on the source materials.

Social Media

Instagram was use to extend the reach of our project and updating on the launch and project progression. It is created 2 weeks before the campaign starts, to build excitement. Initially we share sketch process, then followed by the back story of each of the characters in our deck. We also collaborated with other creators on Kickstarter.

The project was fully funded only a little after 24 hours after it is launched. We introduce each card suits every week after the launch, starting with the diamond suits. The campaign lasted for 40 days. Our efforts afterwards focuses on managing the printing, fulfillment, funds allocation, as well as responding to backers messages. Although there were delay due to the pandemic, the project are successfully coming to completion.
